5.0 out of 5 stars Start well with Tom Tom, 9 Sep 2011
This review is from: TomTom Start 25 5" Sat Nav with Europe Maps (45 countries) (Electronics)
Bought for my wife who is technophobic! This Tom Tom is intuitive and very easy to use and my wife has operated it without difficulty over 1500 miles in France this summer without having to look at an instruction manual. She does not use motorways or the major national routes and the Tom Tom has navigated her perfectly through the minor scenic routes that she prefers. It has several features that are excellent, the screen rotates so that the image and instructions are always the right way up, voice prompts are unambiguaous and detailed and the screem itself is very clear. The power cable is good with a usb charger built in and the same cable can be used to connect to your PC for updating maps and speed camera locations. A good product that works well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, like it a lot.., 21 Jun 2011

I've been somewhat cynical in the past about owning one preferring to stick with a paper map. I thought I should get with the times and having seen a more expensive unit when a friend came around for the weekend, I decided to opt for an entry level device. The price for this Tom-Tom did not seem overly expensive.

    In the box is:

    the Sat Nav itself
a car charger lead [which joins to...]
a USB cable [which joins the unit itself to the charger]
    a paper quick start guide

This Sat Nav can sit on a dashboard beanbag [purchased separately] if you decide to go for this. It uses a sucker which with a simple twist locks the seal. Alternatively it will attach itself to the inside of the windscreen using the same method. Out of the box and into the car then, the Sat Nav found my home position quickly after powering it up. I set this and I was up and running in five minutes tops.

The first thing to do is to find your destination and you can... Read more

    4.0 out of 5 stars TomTom Start 25, 16 July 2011
I bought the Start 25 EU as a replacement for a 3 year old Garmin 255W, which died on me soon after a map update. Was initially tempted by the XXL as the price of those have come down now TomTom has updated their range. However the XXL has only 2GB worth of memory and therefore any updates to the European maps will not fit (so one has to choose what part of Europe one wants to install- not great if you want to go to Italy e.g.).
    The good:
    - The Start 25 EU has 4GB memory.
    - Excellent screen. Great detail, which gives you a good idea of the road system around where you are travelling. In case you want to
get off your choosen route e.g when motorway signs tell you there are delays up ahead.
    - Also better size: 5 inches is easier to see especially when mounted further away on the windscreen
    - '3D' view is excellent.
    - There are many ways you can adapt the screen and alerts to your own taste. E.g. how the map looks, how many instructions you want... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor route selection, 5 Jun 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What is this?)
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 2445 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Western Europe Maps (Electronics)
I bought the Garmin this year to replace an ancient sat nav from a rival manufacturer.
I had no complaints about its route selection.

If left to its own devices the Garmin will favour suburbs and inner city roads, in spite of the fact that I have chosen the Faster Time option.

The routes plotted by the Garmin nearly always deliver longer journey times than can be obtained by using its trip planner. Using the trip planner requires great care when selecting waypoints on roads with dual carriageways.

The Garmin will often choose a more tortuous route than is necessary which results in increased journey time.

The destination selection is a wrestling match in all but the most simple of cases, a request for an address as a target destination, for instance, will elicit cities in the USA as well as those in the UK.I have a version with UK and western European maps !

All of the routes that I currently travel using the Garmin are those... Read more

      4.0 out of 5 stars Garmin 2445, 15 Jun 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What is this?)
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 2445 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Western Europe Maps (Electronics)
Compares well with earlier Nuvi models with straight forward setup and updating, although the update is not exactly state of the art. Some fairly recent local changes have not been included, although, in fairness none are on major roads. This model disagrees with my last model as to to quickest route from home to the main road network but soon resigns itself to my desires. The much advertised pictures of road junctions have not yet materialised but I have not yet tried a long journey on main roads.
The box no longer includes a plastic disc to fix to the dashboard so that the bracket has to be fixed to the windscreen with the rubber sucker - not the best place on a hot summer day but still, apparently, the usual practice. Nevertheless, all in all, a satisfactory purchase as expected from Amazon.,

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, 13 Jun 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What is this?)
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 2445 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Western Europe Maps (Electronics)
My first sat nav and so far so good. However on Thames Pageant Sunday it managed to take me a weird route from South of the Thames round Hyde Park, North of Oxford Street and down Whitehall before suggesting I cross the Thames again to get to my destination which was South of the river. Still we have seen areas of the country we did not expect to see and still arrive at our chosen destination.
