I have had the Nuvi 1240 for two weeks now. It was sent from Germany but, with standard postage, arrived within three days of the Amazon order.

There is minimal documentation and no software CD in the package so expect to find yourself on the Garmin web site very soon in order to get the PDF documentation and to download the system upgrading software and maps management software.

I had some problems with the unit turning itself off when re-routing (possibly when avoiding U-turns) but this appears to have been resolved by the latest online software upgrade (v2.70) which was painless to install. A mini-USB cable is required for the software upgrade (not supplied).

The Garmin maps updater software reported that the Navteq maps were already the latest available for this model (CN Europe NT 2010.10).

Start-up is around 25 seconds. Satellite lock seemed to vary considerably but, in ideal conditions, seemed to be around 30-40 seconds from... Read more

This is my first Sat-Nav. I did some research and was looking for a model that told me the name of roads I was to turn on to. I didn't want to spend too much and wanted something that would work well. The Ecoroute facility (which tells you the most fuel efficient route from A-B)sold it to me.
This model did what I expected and got me sucessfully through a 230 mile journey at the weekend without problem. I am very pleased with the Garmin 1240 and would recommend it to friends looking for a Sat-Nav that does the job you would expect it to.
Just to be aware... When you start the Sat-Nav for the first time after updating all the software it can take a few minutes to locate the satellites, after the second/third time it takes a few seconds.

We were looking for a replacement for our old but trusty Garmin i3 sat nav. Senior Management loves the Garmin logic and detests my Tom Tom 720 as being too temperamental (some software upgrades from TomTom have been "bug" ridden), complex and bulky. This nuvi 1200 series is thinner than the previous models and is very simple to operate. Map seems OK, but can be confused - e.g. did not recognise the lane of my brothers farm, which has been in existence for a century!

    Advantages:
Bright, clear screen - easy to read
Small, slim & light - slips into pocket
Voice directions are loud and clear
Free 30 day subscription of speed cameras.
Can be used in "pedestrian" mode for walking around a town.

    Disadvantage:
Not sure whether it's possible to tell this Garmin not to route along a certain road; i.e. if the M1 is blocked, is there a facility to pre-plan a reroute?

This is a "basic" sat nav (no bluetooth or FM transmitter or... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, like it a lot.., 21 Jun 2011
I've been somewhat cynical in the past about owning one preferring to stick with a paper map. I thought I should get with the times and having seen a more expensive unit when a friend came around for the weekend, I decided to opt for an entry level device. The price for this Tom-Tom did not seem overly expensive.

      In the box is:

      the Sat Nav itself
a car charger lead [which joins to...]
a USB cable [which joins the unit itself to the charger]
      a paper quick start guide

This Sat Nav can sit on a dashboard beanbag [purchased separately] if you decide to go for this. It uses a sucker which with a simple twist locks the seal. Alternatively it will attach itself to the inside of the windscreen using the same method. Out of the box and into the car then, the Sat Nav found my home position quickly after powering it up. I set this and I was up and running in five minutes tops.

The first thing to do is to find your destination and you can... Read more

      4.0 out of 5 stars TomTom Start 25, 16 July 2011
I bought the Start 25 EU as a replacement for a 3 year old Garmin 255W, which died on me soon after a map update. Was initially tempted by the XXL as the price of those have come down now TomTom has updated their range. However the XXL has only 2GB worth of memory and therefore any updates to the European maps will not fit (so one has to choose what part of Europe one wants to install- not great if you want to go to Italy e.g.).
      The good:
      - The Start 25 EU has 4GB memory.
      - Excellent screen. Great detail, which gives you a good idea of the road system around where you are travelling. In case you want to
get off your choosen route e.g when motorway signs tell you there are delays up ahead.
      - Also better size: 5 inches is easier to see especially when mounted further away on the windscreen
      - '3D' view is excellent.
      - There are many ways you can adapt the screen and alerts to your own taste. E.g. how the map looks, how many instructions you want... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Problems Start When You Try To Update, 28 Sep 2011

      (REAL NAME)
I bought this to replace my Tomtom GO520 which was a great but maps are expensive to update so I decided to just get a more modern satnav with Tomtom's 'latest map guarantee'. So I switched it on, had a play and it seemed basic but functional. Then I plug it in to update the map and since then it's just not worked.

Firstly, you can't back up your old map so if you install a new map it deletes your old one first before downloading your new one. Consequently if you're download doesn't work then you've a satnav with no maps or a brick.

I've been onto Tomtom about it but as with most IT companies they ask you what system you're using, Pc or Mac, what browser, wireless, wired..? Personally if the unit is going to be that picky about how it gets it's data then it's just not worth the effort.

My grievance isn't with the unit but the way it's 'updated' or destroyed as in my case. I wouldn't buy another Tomtom if it had to be accessed by Mytomtom... Read more

Ordered 22nd arrived 7:00am on 24th March. Made use of: 24th March.Walked around Tunbridge Wells all day with a smug sense of satisfaction regards this purchase! Not a lot to be said really. Well made official Garmin product. Purchased to accomodate NuLink! 1695 Live. Unit fits snugly inside case and is secured tightly by a sturdy velcro attachment. Even if carried upside between tow fingers is held in by velcro closure and elasticated sides of case. Screen is protected by Suede/nubuck lining which also helps to buff the piano black finish of the sat nav unit. Case itself is beautifully well finished and actually has the look of of an expensive small man bag or ladies clutch bag. These days a very modern look in my opinion. Does the job of protecting the unit itself excellently. Well worth buying and actually looks more valuable than the 9.99 price tag.
