I deliberated for a long time before taking the plunge. The decision was between this TomTom and the traffic version of the Garmin Nuvi. I decided on the TomTom, as magazine reviews said that the TomTom had a more comprehensive live traffic reporting service. Apparently the Garmin's traffic covers motorways and major roads only and as the traffic facility was the major reason for upgrading from my existing original TomTom satnav, TomTom it was.

Out of the box, the bigger and clearer screen is a great improvement over my original TomTom.

However, setting up the device started to show why this model has been heavily criticised elsewhere. I put in my address to define Home to the device. Apparently number 3 in my street does not exist, neither does number 1 or 5. This is strange since my earlier TomTom recognised my address correctly. Never mind, I will use the facility to put my current location as my Home address. Problem solved.

I next put in my eldest... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Reduced functions, but fantastic SatNav, 6 Nov 2010
    By
TomTom have been market leaders in simplicity and accuracy of navigation for many years now, and I have been a loyal follower having used several models. The new 1000 / 1005 series (1005 simply has a bigger screen), is another step forward in the device - slim, attractive and so easy to use. However, there have been a number of criticisms of these models as TomTom seem to be reducing functionality rather than increasing it - so, for example, you won't yet find the ability to add your own POIs, btu the company says that is coming.

What you have here though is a continued refinement of the core functionality of the device - the ability to go from A to B simply, easily, with the minimal hassle and without getting lost, ending up in a dead end, or the wrong side of the country! The TomTom 1005 does that superbly. The box arrived just before I had to make a trip to Shropshire, via the M5 / M6 junction, the satnav was out of the box, in the car, fired up and ready to go within... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed with the Go Live 1000, 13 May 2011
I bought this Tomtom and for a week it work great. Then I did the updates on it and lost all the speed camera data.
Spoke to Tomtom support and they were aware of the problem, but as to date have no fix for it. My advice is if you buy any of the Tomtom Live series, is not to do any updates till the software problems have been resolved. Its now been a month and I'm still waiting for a software fix. Its worth reading the Tomtom forum if you're thinking of buying one, that will help you reach a decision.

The Amazon title is misleading, but I'm pleased to say that this is what I thought it was. I bought one of these for my Nuvi 370, and it works a treat. I have just driven 60 miles, through bendy, twisty country lanes, and the mount did not move at all, and the Nuvi was within reach at all times. I have a Peugeot 307 and the dashboard is not at all flat, but still the mount stayed where I put it. Well worth the money - I'm really pleased with it. If taking it overseas, beware of the airport screening. The mount contains metal balls and shows up clearly on the X-ray and the security staff will want to search your bag !

4.0 out of 5 stars Its certainly big!, 10 April 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase( What is this?)
This review is from: Garmin Universal Friction Mount for 700/600/300/200 series (Electronics)
From looking at the picture I thought this had some sort of suction mount underneath and panicked when it arrived as it seemed huge. Unpacking it revealed I'd been wrong and it is basically a very heavy beanbag which squats on your dashboard like a toad.
Took it for a spin and tried to shift it by some heavy braking but it just sat there and grinned at me.
Looks like my one complaint about the Nuvi 310 has been answered.
I'll update to 5 stars if it behaves itself and if I can get it through the airport when I next travel to the UK and hire a car! Apparently its filled with small steel balls.
UPDATE - Got it through customs with no problems and it did its toad thing on the hired Renault dash. Nuvi had some slight screen tremor at times as not so isolated from vibration as when stuck to the windscreen but not distracting and the roads do need repairing!
Should now be a five star review but seems I can't amend that bit.

This is one superb piece of kit from Garmin.
I bought this to use with the Nuvi 200W and it's just a shame Garmin didn't supply this with the Satnav instead of the Windows mount.
Once you've used this you'll never use the Windows mount again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great SatNav, highly recommended, 23 April 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 1390T 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Europe Maps (Electronics)
Bought this a couple of days ago. Due to the volcano cloud, I had to drive from CH to Calais on the north of France and back. My old GPS didn't have Euromaps and was 5 years old so I needed an upgrade

      + Very easy to use
+ Points of interest + favourites work well
+ pedestrian mode works well, finding fuel, shops, money, restaurants in an unusual town is now very easy
      + built quality top
      + voice clear
+ route calcuations very quick, 850km takes 5 secs to calculate
+ Add in a "via" point if you want to detour. When you select a new desitination while driving a current route, it asks if this is a via point or a new destination. (some reviews says it doesn't have this feature???)
+ speed limits displayed, 99% accurate and very handy
+ fixed speed cameras, good to know where they are
+ Distance to go, time to go etc, very accurate
+ Very secure windscreen mount and clasp.
+ At autobahn junctions, display switches to show... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine- really works well, 11 Nov 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 1390T 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Europe Maps (Electronics)
I bought this for a marketing trip in which we were to visit 120 shops throughout the UK in a 2 week period (Poole to Inverness, Canterbury to Menai Bridge). So a pretty extensive undertaking, we were to be on our own in the car for the majority of the time and although I am a confident driver I had never driven in the UK previously. If it wasn't for this sat nav it wouldn't have worked!

We had opportunity to compare it as we hired the second unit from the car hire company. The unit we hired was an older Garmin. It was not wide screen and didn't have traffic knowledge or bluetooth. I have to say this machine was vastly superior in its navigation. We each had highly frustrating situations with the hired one in which we simply couldn't find our way- telling us to turn where there were no roads/one way roads. Taking us repeatedly on and off packed motorways, ambiguous directions etc. This NEVER happened with this machine. Well, there was the odd ambiguous direction,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this rather than a Tomtom - and very glad I did !, 4 July 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 1390T 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Europe Maps (Electronics)
I bought this Garmin product a couple of months ago, having had TOMTOMs (and 1 Garmin)in the past. I deliberately waited a while before reviewing it to put it through its paces. I have mainly been a Tomtom user but my latest Tomtom (Europe XL) was nicked from the car! so I needed a new unit. I was a quite disappointed in the tomtom, particulalry since the batteries would flatten if it wasn't used for a few days then would take a few moments to spring into life - very poor really and not unheard of apparrently. So... this time I bought a GARMIN. This model is much much much more improved than my earlier Garmin. It is easy to use (the wife got the hang of it in no time), fires up quickly, retains its charge, speaks street names and road numbers (wow - how good is that - it's brilliant). Never thought I'd use Bluetooth for my phone, but hey... its so easy I don't know how I managed without it. I could rave on and on about this unit, but you probably get the picture by now (I give...
